Like everyone else, I’ve held a lot of positions in life – but when I look back on them all, it’s pretty clear why I became a leadership coach.
When I was a junior in college, my advisor called me a square peg in a round hole. She really struggled to figure out what to do with a left-brained electrical engineering student who was much more aligned with people-oriented work. She looked almost as baffled as I felt. How did these pieces fit together?
After graduation, I worked in 4 different industries, honing skills like process analysis, design, and project management. Basically, I focused on efficiency – and I was really good at it! But it didn’t light me up.
I moved on to pursue a Master’s degree, which gave me the opportunity to teach a graduate course in “Analytical Tools for Decision Making” – and through the experience of teaching these concepts, my wide range of skills came together perfectly.
In that classroom, I came alive! And, I learned two essential things about myself:
Soon, I was working as a change consultant and sales trainer for General Electric, facilitating large-scale change projects for customers and training sales teams to reach new heights of efficiency and performance. For a people-oriented engineering type, it was a perfect fit.
After 30+ years as a process-improvement expert, trainer, and change leader, I know that:
With a solid framework of simple methodologies in place, any team can function, but in order to truly thrive, relationship building and collaboration are critical to success.
I spent years learning and teaching the skills to develop and maintain great relationships:
Leaders who master these skills and practice them consistently inevitably see their teams succeed.
As it turns out, these skills improve every part of life. The more I studied, practiced, and taught them, the more my work and my life fell into lockstep. The happier, more balanced, and more effective I became, the more I wanted to coach other professionals and leaders – which brought me to PivotBetter.
Outside of work, I’ve spent decades studying the impact of mindsets and beliefs, goals and intentions, habits and patterns, yoga and meditation. Naturally, this passion has influenced the way I approach my work.
At all times, I strive to be:
My core values include:
